'Spine-tingling and stomach-churning.' Time Out NY
Broadway's acclaimed enfant terrible, Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent, Anna in the Tropics, The Rocky Horror Show, A Streetcar Named Desire), makes her London debut in a special staged reading presentation of Aaron Mark's one-woman thriller, Empanada Loca.
Loosely inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd, Empanada Loca is "contemporary Grand Guignol horror in the style of Spalding Gray". Presented Off-Broadway by Labyrinth Theater Company in 2015, Empanada Loca earned Rubin-Vega nominations for both the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics' Circle Awards.
Now living deep under Manhattan in an abandoned subway tunnel with the Mole People, a very hungry Dolores (Rubin-Vega) recounts her early years selling weed with her boyfriend, her return to New York's Washington Heights after thirteen years in prison, her fortuitous reunion with an old stoner friend who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his empanada shop, and the bloodbath that ultimately sends her fleeing underground.
'Daphne Rubin-Vega’s bewitching beauty seems to transform in Empanada Loca, an exuberantly macabre solo show written and directed by Aaron Mark for the Labyrinth Theater Company. As you watch her strip away the layers of her character’s apparent normality to reveal a woman who can placidly discuss the most gruesome acts imaginable, Ms. Rubin-Vega seems to take on a furtive, almost feral quality that had me shivering all the way home.' The New York Times
'Utterly transfixing...Empanada Loca is a real hair-raiser.' Theatermania
'This is a terrific night of theater, quite literally.' Huffington Post
'If you're looking for a bedtime story guaranteed to keep you up, shuddering, far into the night, Empanada Loca is the show for you.' Lighting and Sound America
