Waiting For Smith debuted in December 2016 with a brilliant Christmas video that’s had 11,240 hits on YouTube and was shot for £200 that you can watch here.
The band consists of Harry (vocals, keyboards, guitar), a ski instructor until he broke his back three years ago; Carl (bass), former bassist for Tom Jones; Molly (vocals), choir mistress on the Xmas song, who is just 17; and Tim (drums), the (much better) replacement for Smith, WFS’s original drummer, who consistently failed to show - hence the band’s name.
Waiting For Smith is developing a really original sound that defies category. Their music is eclectic – from poignant ballads to foot-tapping steady groove – and it counts among its influences J.J. Cale, Dire Straits, David Bowie, The Kinks, Mozart, Thelonious Monk, Leonard Cohen, Billy Joel and A Tribe Called Quest.
It’s also unusually catchy – with strong hooks and instantly memorable melodies that get under your skin and stay there.
Once heard, never forgotten. Catch them while they’re new (and cheap).
There’s another YouTube video (shot much more expensively in Rome) here.
